Curriculum Vitae

Biography: I was born and raised in Germany. I earned the equivalent of a Master's degree in translation studies with a specialization in economics from Johannes-Gutenberg-University Mainz at Germersheim. My Ph.D. in German applied linguistics is from the University of Texas at Austin. I taught at the University of Oregon, Utah State University and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign prior to joining Texas State University.

Research Interests: My research falls within the methodological framework of conversation analysis, which views talk-in-interaction as the primordial site of social action and which analyzes talk in order to show how patterns of communication unfold. Specifically, I investigate the connection between grammar and interaction on the one hand, and language use in different cultures on the other. I am currently working on the use and function of various German response tokens, person and "thing" reference, and German discourse markers.
