	Language Requirement
		For the BA, a proficiency level of successful completion of American Sign Language, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, or Spanish, 2310 and 2320 is required. Most students will need to complete the first year of the language (1410 and 1420) before beginning 2310. Students who have previous language experience are required to take a placement/credit test in that language on the first-class day in any first-semester class (1410). It is recommended that students should not advance from one course to the next in the sequence 1410, 1420, 2310, 2320 without having earned at least a C in the previous course. In Spanish, students must earn at least a C in a course in 1410-2320 sequence to proceed to the next course.
	Majors and Minors
		Students who major in French, German, or Spanish must complete 24 hours of 3000-4000 level course work. Students who minor in French, German, Japanese, or Spanish must complete 15 hours of 3000-4000 level course work. Language majors must maintain a GPA of at least 2.50 in upper division courses. Students majoring in French and considering a career in the professions should complete FR 3381, 3382, and 4370; students considering a career in teaching should complete FR 3310, 3341, and 4341; students pursuing the study of literature should complete FR 3305, 3306, and 4304. Students majoring in German and considering a career in the professions should complete GER 3320, 3370, and 3380. Students majoring in Spanish should complete SPAN 3308 (prerequisite to all upper division courses), 3309 (prerequisite to upper division courses in literature), 4340, plus five courses from 3301, 3302, 3305, 3306, 3310, 3311, 3312, 3370, 3371, 4302, 4330, 4350, 4361. 4362, 4370, and 4380. Students pursuing teacher certification in French, German, or Spanish must complete Linguistics 4307 prior to student teaching. Bachelor ot Arts: Majors in French, German or Spanish (128-130 hours; 39 advanced hours required) Notes: Six upper division courses, for German and French including 3310, 4340, for Spanish including 3308 and 4340 and excluding 3304, and six hours of upper division literature are required for a major in a modern language. Candidates may complete the major with as few as 18 semester hours, if they are qualified to begin at the junior level. However, a major will normally represent 28 to 32 hours of course work (eight to ten courses). An approved minor must be completed. A language major that elects to minor in a second language must complete five 3000-4000 level courses in the second language. Students seeking a teaching certificate in French, German, or Spanish must complete a minimum of 7 upper division courses in the language plus Linguistics 4307. Students must also complete the required education courses: Curriculum and Instruction 3310, 3325, 4332, 4343, Reading 3323, and Education 4681 (student teaching) as part of their teacher certification program requirements. Students should review the section of the catalog stating requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree.
