Texas State University is the only university in central Texas, other than UT Austin, that offers a minor in Japanese.
The Japanese program at Texas State also provides an opportunity for study at Kansai Gaidai University (in Osaka) and Meiji Gakuin University (in Tokyo) in Japan. These programs are even-exchange programs, which allow Texas State students to attend these universities with no additional tuition costs. This is a great deal! Scholarships of up to $10,000 per year are also available to qualifying students.
There is a summer study-abroad program in Nagoya, Japan during summer I. This is a four-week program. In this program, students have the opportunity to live with a Japanese host family during the course and can experience many cultural activities including an overnight trip to Kyoto (an ancient capital of Japan).

Scholarship Information
AIEJ Scholarship (scholarship available through the Japanese Government)

The AIEJ offers two types of scholarships: AIEJ short-term exchange promotion program scholarship (hereinafter referred to as AIEJ short-term scholarship) and AIEJ short-term student exchange promotion Peace and Friendship scholarship (hereinafter referred to as AIEJ Peace and Friendship scholarship).

Students who are currently enrolled in universities in Asia-Pacific Rim countries are eligible for both scholarships, but will not be able to apply for both scholarships simultaneously. Students who are enrolled in universities in non-Asia-Pacific Rim countries (i.e., European countries) are eligible only for the AIEJ short-term scholarship. According to AIEJ guidelines, it is preferable for students who apply for the AIEJ Peace and Friendship Scholarship to stay for about 10 months. Students enrolling in Kansai Gaidai University and Meiji Gakuin University for one full academic year meet this guideline.

Bridging Scholarship Program

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 50 scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan that begin in Fall 2008. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan. The scholarships are funded by donations from U.S. corporations and foundations to the US-Japan Bridging Foundation. Since 1999, the Bridging Scholarship program has awarded more than 800 scholarships to students studying abroad in Japan.

In addition, Morgan Stanley will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan and who have an interest in economics and international finance. Applicants must submit an essay on one of several designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.

Fall programs are those beginning between August and October and continuing for at least three months. (Summer program participants are not eligible for Bridging Scholarships.) Students planning to study abroad in Japan beginning after January 1 should apply in October for the Spring scholarships.

Information on the Bridging and Morgan Stanley scholarships and downloadable application forms are available at ATJ's website: http://www.colorado.edu/ealld/atj/Bridging/scholarships.html.
Printed application brochures are also available.
