Catalog Description:
Introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills within an Italian cultural framework. Students who begin Italian 1410 toward general educational requirements must also complete 1420.
Course Rationale:
This course will be offered as part of a series of courses in Italian language courses to support Art History & Music (Local performance) Studies at Southwest Texas State University. The course will introduce students to the basic structures of Italian and basic cultural concepts of the Italian presence in the world today. The course will include topics of interest to students in a variety of fields, among them: Modern Languages, Art and Design, Music, Opera studies, Italo-American Studies, History, Anthropology, and studies of the Ancient Roman Diaspora.
Course Goals:
The course goals will be the same as those of all other first semester language courses taught in the Department of Modern Languages. The main objective of this course is to provide a strong foundation in the Italian language and some general knowledge of Italian culture, Art and Music Histories. By the end of the semester, students will be able to express themselves in simple communicative situations, such as introducing oneself, providing personal information, going shopping, talking about self and family. Students will also be able to write simple, brief compositions like those in informal letters and postcards.
