Roberto A. Galván Scholarship

The Department of Modern Languages annually offers the Roberto A. Galván/San Marcos
Lions Club scholarship to the most highly qualified student majoring or minoring in
Spanish. The scholarship is applied to tuition and fees at Texas State University or to a
Spanish study abroad program sponsored by Texas State University. Recipients of the
scholarship are not excluded from applying in following years.
The Roberto A. Galván scholarship committee has established the following policies and
procedures.
I. Selection Criteria
Eligible students
1. must be a declared major or minor in Spanish;
2. must have junior or senior standing (i.e., have earned at least 60 hours at the
college level)
3. must have earned at least 30 hours at Texas State at the time of application,
including the current semester;
4. must have completed or be enrolled in an upper division course in Spanish;
5. must have at least a 2.75 overall GPA on SWT hours and at least a 3.25 GPA
in Spanish;
6. must have a documented financial need (see confidential financial declaration);
7. should be an active participant in departmental activities or present evidence
of other academic honors.
II. Application Procedures
Applicants submit
1. a cover letter and a 500 word essay describing the role their major/minor in
Spanish has played or will play in their academic career;
Applicants must include a statement whether they are related by blood or marriage
to any member of the Texas State System Board of Regents (see list at
http://www.tsus.edu/regents/index.html). A student who is related to a current
member of the Board of Regents is prohibited from receiving scholarships unless
the scholarship is awarded exclusively on academic merit or is an athletic
scholarship. It is a Class B misdemeanor to file a false statement.
2. a résumé;
3. an unofficial current Texas State transcript;
4. a confidential financial declaration;
5. two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with their academic
work.
The top two or three candidates will have an 15-30 minute interview with the
Roberto A. Galván Scholarship Committee.

Competition officially opens on February 1 of each year, and the deadline for submission
is March 10.
